Field Trip and Seminar Learnings
Why do students need Field Trips and Seminars? Field trips obviously are an essential part of some areas of study such as science and history. Could you imagine someone training adequately to become an archaeologist without going out into the field to participate in the nuts-and-bolts activities of excavating an actual historical site? However, we should recognize that field trips really are essential to the educational experience at all levels and in all manner of coursework. On a practical level, some lessons can only be learned beyond or outside of the classroom. They (field trips and seminars) provide students with experiences that cannot be duplicated in the school but are nonetheless an integral part of school instruction.
Field trips and seminars engage students in studies beyond what would be the case in a classroom or lecture hall setting. In other words, students are more captivated by first-hand encounters with the subject matter, which facilitates learning. Students who go on field trips become more motivated to learn and also it can boost a student's confidence, allowing a child to experiment or experience educational opportunities is a safe and fun environment that will in turn boost learning. Students will be motivated to learn in new ways, and this improves the retention and understanding of facts. The intimate interaction with learning that field trips allow can inspire students to consider career paths. Who knows? Someday, there would be a possibility that one of our batch will be given a chance to work one of the companies we visited during our company tour in Manila.
Memories of school field trips are among the most prominent of the formative years, largely because they are a welcome break in the routine for both teachers and especially us, students who are stressed because of the projects and exams most of the time. While their purpose is essentially to educate, they can also be a fun bonding experience for everyone involved like for those people who have lesser friends, there is a big possibility that after the field trip he or she can have more friends. Not just fun day outings, field trips can be valuable educational experiences that challenge and enlighten students in ways not available in a classroom. A field trip can allow students to see and things that they may never otherwise experience and to obtain real-world knowledge not possible within the four walls of the school. A good field trip can bring dry facts or concepts to life, illuminate cultures and arts, and give the student hands-on participation opportunities. Opportunities knocks at our door once in a lifetime that is why we need to grab the chance if there would be a chance that comes along our way.
An educational field trip and seminar can inspire students to learn and discover knowledge. Whether you are an educator planning an outing that will be integrated into classroom content, a scout leader looking to help your troop earn a new badge, a home-school parent interested in planning a group educational class or an administrator in search of an innovative means to boost school moral, there are a variety of field trip venues to consider.
Field trips are most common in elementary schools. For the purposes of school trips, most excursions involve an academic focus, such as a trip to the museum trip to Enchanted Kingdom like we did during our field trip in Manila. Or they offer a look at something relevant to a course, like a theater class going to see a local performance.Field trips give us, students tangible and sometimes hands-on experiences that pertain to what we're learning in school. Students' studies become more meaningful when, instead of just reading about the monkeys, we are able to watch them in their habitat.
Taking students into a new environment gives us the experience of traveling in a group and teaches us to be respectful of the locations we visit. Just like the companies we have visited during our field trip and seminar in Manila like in Toshiba Company, we need to follow their rules like before entering TOSHIBA gate, security will issue Plant Entry Authorization Form and Green Access Badge. Have the Plant Entry Authorization Form signed by the plant tour organizer after the tour proper and return it with the Green Access Badge at the security gate upon departure.Every participant of the tour must wear socks. This is needed upon changing of outdoor shoes to indoor ESD shoes. Indoor ESD shoes are used inside the building premises.Be aware of the Off shoe area rule. When changing into indoor ESD shoes at the receiving area of the lobby, do not place or step your outdoor shoes on the upper leveled floor, and do not place or step the indoor ESD shoes on the lower leveled floor. Before the start of the plant tour, smock gowns, hairnets, and caps will be provided. Please wear them properly at all times inside the building premises. Always pin the Visitors ID on the left side of the smock gown. Always observe silence. Be aware of the keep-right pedestrian rule inside the building premises. Always keep at the right side of the way for safety purposes. Cellphones are not allowed during the actual plant tour. You may leave cellphones inside your bags, before proceeding to the actual plant tour in the manufacturing areas. Bringing of bags in the manufacturing areas is not allowed. You may leave your bags in the meeting room before the actual plant tour. Taking of pictures and video during the plant tour is not allowed. Picture taking is allowed only in the receiving room and in the lobby area. Eating food and candies, as well as chewing gums during the actual plant tour is not allowed. No horse playing and running inside the building premises. Do not put hands inside the pockets of the smock gowns while walking in the building premises, for safety purposes. Walk briskly during the actual plant tour. Return smock gowns, hairnets, caps, and visitor ID pin after the plant tour. Upon departure, change indoor ESD shoes to your respective outdoor shoes at the receiving area of the lobby. Remember the Off shoe area rule. Do not place or step your outdoor shoes on the upper leveled floor, and do not place or step the indoor ESD shoes on the lower leveled floor.
I found out that students who go on field trips and seminars want to learn more about the subjects on which the trip focused. Just like when we went to PLDT, Mandaluyong City when they introduce to us the advance technology they have used but they did not yet implemented because they still have to work for it. As PLDT's products and services continued to evolve, the Company began upgrading its network in 2005 to the Next Generation Network, a broad term for certain emerging computer network architectures and technologies that can encompass voice, data and video where all information is efficiently transmitted via digital packets of data just like over the Internet. This means greater efficiency, cost savings and more innovative services for subscribers in the years to come. We did enjoy touring inside their office.
As an overview in our Major Field Trip and Seminar, different companies gave us a good and nice tour inside their building. Some allow us to bring our gadgets inside and some don’t allow us to bring our gadgets for confidentiality and for security purposes. What I learned in our field trip and seminar on our first day of our company tour is Social Security System is it began in 1957. It is a government agency that provides retirement and health benefits to all enrolled employees in the Philippines. Members of the SSS can also make 'salary' or 'calamity' loans. Salary loans depend on the monthly salary of the employee. Calamity loans are for such times when there is a calamity that has been so declared by the government, in the area where the SSS member lives, such as flooding, earthquake and natural disasters. They welcome us, students warmingly. I also like during their discussions they give some souvenirs or prizes to those students who can answer their questions correctly to prove that we listen to their speech. We did not tour the whole building because of the weather.
On our second day in manila, we attend one of the biggest event held her in our country, the Philippine Youth Congress on Information Technology (Y4iT) is carrying on to its 11th year with the most-sought speakers in the IT field. Included in the list of featured speakers for this year’s Y4iT are international practitioners Wendy Gorton of Google, Danny Castonguay of Kalibrr, Johan Janssens of Timble, Markku Kero of Job and Esther Technologies, Christy Book-Tsang of Linux Professional Institute (Asia Pacific), and Bebo White of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (a US national laboratory based in Stanford University). Participants will be able to engage in lively discussions with them regarding the current happenings in the international Information Technology scene. Prof. Remmel Feria, Project Manager for Y4iT mentioned that this congress ensures that Filipino students get to see a survey of the exciting developments and breakthroughs in the field of Information Technology and put them into context, so that they won’t be left behind in this growing field. Y4iT held last September 17-19 at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City. This is the first time the congress will be held outside of Quezon City since its inception in 2003 and this is our first time that we attend one of the biggest event here in our country.
The third company that we visit during our field trip and seminar in manila is the PLDT or Philippine Long Distance Telephone. What I learned in this company is that I learn how to manage their company especially in the smallest thing down to the biggest one. I was also amazed about their advance technology they use in their system during our company tour and also the very amazing and advance technology in the other country when they present to us some video about the advance technology used in the other country. With that, I was inspired to study hard and make my studies good to achieve my goals in life. What I liked in this company is that they have an isolated room for visitors to test the advance technology they used. What i didn’t like is that they did not allow us to bring camera inside that’s why we don’t have any pictures inside or outside their company for security purpose or confidentiality also.
The fourth that we visit during our field trip and seminar in manila is the IBM Philippines, Ayala Techno, Commonwealth. IBM has been a leading proponent of the Open Source Initiative, and began supporting Linux in 1998. The company invests billions of dollars in services and software based on Linux through the IBM Linux Technology Center, which includes over 300 Linux kernel developers. IBM holds more patents than any other U.S. based technology company and has eleven research laboratories worldwide. The company has scientists, engineers, consultants, and sales professionals in over 170 countries. IBM employees have earned five Nobel Prizes, four Turing Awards, five National Medals of Technology, and five National Medals of Science.
The fifth company that we have visited is Toshiba Storage Device, Canlubang. What I learned in this company is that I learn what are the other processes on how to make laptops and the lifespan or range of the device they have made. I also like that when we knew that there is a lot of davaoenyos working there and not only that, we also have an alumni working over there and were so proud of that. I also like the tour inside their company because we were given a chance to know what are the processes when they make a laptop.I did n’t like the speaker which is the Vice President especially when he talks to us because some words are hard to understand.
And the last company that we have visited during our company tour in manila is Metro Manila Development Authority or what we called as MMDA (Traffic Engineering), Mandaluyong. What I learned in this company is that I learned how they manage those everyday accidents happens in Metro Manila. They also taught us some basic safety precautions during and after the earthquake. What I liked in this company is that they let us try to experience their “Shake, Rattle and Learn House” or what we call the house during earthquake and we enjoy a lot. What I didn’t like in this company is those accident videos happened everyday in Metro Manila because some accidents were very harsh that the brain of person bursts on the road.
A successful field trip will incorporate learning from the classroom and bring a new dimension to the material covered at school. For instance, a science class studying insects will understand the facts covered in a new way when visiting a butterfly center or the insect pavilion at the zoo. Middle school students studying Shakespeare's plays will experience what Shakespeare intended when they witness a live performance and will most likely understand the material much better and gain a new appreciation for the author and the art form. A field trip provides sensory experiences. The students will have the opportunity to touch, see, hear, and possibly taste or smell, and that sensory interaction will aid learning.Kids get to visit a place to which they have never been before. This can be particularly advantageous to students who are less fortunate and don't have the opportunity to travel.
A field trip can allow all types of learners to excel in acquiring knowledge on a subject, building confidence for further learning. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds will be allowed the opportunity to see and experience places and events otherwise unobtainable to them. Children who participate in civic or conservation activities will benefit the community during their outing and will be more likely to be engaged in such pursuits in the future. Certain field trips allow students to develop team work skills and camaraderie that will aid later classroom projects and learning. Field trips give educators the opportunity to demonstrate what the real-life applications are of lessons they've taught in the classroom.
One way to understand internships is in terms of academic coursework in the context of an extended field trip. Internships are designed to immerse the student in the real world of a particular line of work. That is, such temporary roles with particular companies provide important feedback to students as far as whether a particular vocation is the right one to pursue. Therefore, field trips are a tool to guide students in a particular vocational direction and to help them discover personal aptitudes at an earlier grade.
I would like to share some short sharing in my life before we successfully have our field trip and seminar in Manila which i also learn from here.
Choosing what you really want is what I think is the best for you. It really makes you feel better whether the outcome is good or bad as long as you are comfortable with your decision that you made. But if you didn’t choose what your heart desires because you are forced to choose that thing or you let others decide for you, well I am sure that you will not enjoy the things that you want to do, only because you are told to do so or others decided to choose what is for you. Like for example, when you want take IT courses or anything that is related to computers when you go to college but your parents decided to choose other courses that you don’t even like to take with. It sucks right? You don’t have any choices but to follow that even if you don’t like it. The right thing to do is you need to explain to your parents what you heart desires so that they understand your side.
Same with this situation. Even if my parents especially my mother don’t want to but I understand her because I explained to her a lot of things why I chose model A. choosing model A is a great opportunity for a student like me. Of course, I did have a lot of worries in my mind on how to help my parents to save a large amount of money or where will we be going to have money for the expenses in going to Manila for our Field Trip and Seminars. I understand why my parents strongly disagree on me at first but as what I have written a while ago that I did my best to convince them why I chose model A. At last, I convinced my mother but my brother and sister still don’t agree because they only believe that I chose that model just for fun and not realizing the amount of money to be spent. Sometimes, when I think a lot of things how to help my parents in earning money for our field trip, it’s fun to say that something came out on my mind that make me laugh. What if I’m going to do such bad things such as robbery? And the worst thing if I get caught, the problem will get bigger and the money allotted to my field trip will be spent for me to be out of jail. But I didn’t tolerate that kind of idea no matter what happens, instead I just think of possible ideas to be made. I just now realized wholeheartedly and mentally the importance of money even in the smallest amount like a centavo coin, it will help a lot if you earn them, you just need to be patient.
I chose model A because it will help a lot especially for a student like me who wants to have a big break or who wants to have a great opportunity to find a job over there after I soon successfully graduate at this course, if God’s will. But who knows? I might be working there after a couple of years if I want to. Also it will give an amazing and a lot of experience if we stay there for a couple of days. Taking seminars in Manila will help me boost my confidence after I graduate at this course, because I can now write from my application from the companies in Manila that we invited and attended their seminars during our learning and staying in Manila. I am not saying that seminars here in Mindanao is not so good although we can save a lot of money from traveling but I am thinking of much and great opportunity when we can join seminars in Manila.
Choosing this model will expand your limitations not only in learning but also your ability or skills when you already have a work because I heard a lot of good rumors that Manila has an advance level in training people on how to be competitive and productive Filipino citizens. They also say that people there are more competitive than people here in Davao because a lot of pressure were experienced by the people in Manila but that pressure makes them to be a successful worker in their company. With that, I am much excited to go there not only just for fun or to take rides over there or to take pictures elsewhere but to attend seminars and to learn more and also to apply what I have learned from it.
Since our schedule in Manila is fast approaching that time, I need to prepare myself for what will be the result in choosing model A. My parents gave their best just to support my needs and a lot of sacrifices were done also by myself to help my parents I am so lucky that my parents taught me how to earn money since I was a kid. Now, from my little savings from time to time since I was first year college it reached to 5,000 pesos and it will be a great help for my parents so I help them pay the expenses so my mom don’t worry a lot about searching large amount of money. And lastly I chose model A because since it is our major field trip and it is required in our syllabus and we will still spend money, let us grab the chance to enjoy it. Not only here in Mindanao but also on the other side of our country especially in Manila to experience other things and also to learn at the same time because sometimes opportunity knocks at our door once in a lifetime. So let’s enjoy other places here in our country because it’s more fun in the Philippines.
I would also like to share the importance of a Field Trip. Going on a field trip means more than simply leaving the school grounds. Field trips should always have a major educational element, but the impact of field trips can extend much further. The importance of field trips includes giving students the chance to build closer bonds with their classmates, experience new environments and enjoy a day away from the classroom. When students and teachers are together outside the classroom, new educational environments and experiences are possible. Students may have the opportunity to observe many things that are not available at school, including exotic wildlife, rare plants and maybe even the stars if the field trip is to a planetarium. Discussing the field trip beforehand is wise because it allows students to know what they will experience during their time away from school. Just like what we did before our field trip in Manila. Lots of imagination comes on our minds on what will happen to us when we were there already.
Getting away from the everyday atmosphere of the classroom gives students an opportunity to spend time with each other in a new environment especially in touring some Companies in Manila. They may be able to connect on more of a personal level without the structure of the normal school day. Students may be able to spend much of the field trip day in small groups, observing, chatting and learning about each other. Having a field trip in the early part of the term is wise, since it will allow students to bond with classmates they may not know very well especially for me who is a shy type person.
Field trips provide valuable educational opportunities away from the classroom, without using textbooks and other tools used in a normal school setting. Students on field trips can often learn while having fun in a more informal environment. If the field trip destination has staff members who do hands-on teaching with visiting students -- such as performing on how to manage the appliances with the help of advance technology that the PLDT shown to us, the students will be excited to learn from someone new. No matter how much students learn during a field trip, their favorite memories may be based on their enjoyment of the day especially after our seminars every afternoon we have given a chance to go anywhere as long as it is part of our itenerary. Just like when all of us went to Enchanted Kingdom. We were so enjoy when we went there because almost all of us haven’t try to experience the rides over there especially me. After we went to Enchanted Kingdom almost all of us where tired because we take almost all of the rides especially those rides which are extremes. Getting away from school for a day or even half a day is always exciting for students, and field trips are always highly anticipated. Students will have fun with their friends and they also may return to the classroom with a renewed focus on their schoolwork.Field trips are most common in elementary schools.
School trips come in all forms and sizes. From half-day drives to the local park to a camping trip out of the city, field trips present a way for teachers to approach knowledge in a completely new way and for kids to have fun while learning. Field trips give children a chance to experience hands-on learning while also being introduced to new environments. The boredom of the classroom may lead some students to lose interest in a particular subject. This is especially true of difficult subjects, but it can happen with pretty much anything. Also, new environments can provide challenges that allow for more individual learning, while classroom teaching is often generalized and many times targeted to the slowest learners in the group. During field trips, students have a chance to go the extra step and take on as much information as they want and can. Field trips are a great way to break out of a rut, end a boring subject or bring life into something that seems particularly difficult. It also gives kids a chance to get to know each other and interact in a more relaxed environment, without the pressure of grades or the constraints of classrooms and grades. Field trips are a great way to cement difficult information. Historical facts, biology knowledge or even physics and chemistry can be experienced first-hand during a field trip. For example, a biology field trip could take kids on a hunt for bugs or certain types of flowers, while a history teacher can bring kids to a hands-on exhibit or a special workshop held at a local museum. For this to be more effective, students should have a list of hands-on tasks before they leave for the trip. This could include anything from maps to exercises to a list of things to collect or do during the actual day. Experts believe there are different methods of learning, including visual, auditory and tactile. Students who learn better through tact (known as kinesthethic learning) will greatly benefit from field trips, where the senses come into play a lot more than they would ever do in a classroom. Depending on the type of field trip, teachers can take advantage of this by allowing students to not only observe but also to actively participate in the events going on around them. While tests and classroom education may not work so great for some students, field trips put everybody at the same level, as the learning is experienced, rather than taught. Field trips can also be a great way to provide interaction among subjects. For example, a trip to a local nature center could be used to explore the flora and fauna, practice concepts learned in physics and mathematics, used to jump-start writing topics or made into a history and geography lesson.
Field trips require significant planning and coordination for teachers and administrators, but students often see a field trip as a free day out of the classroom. However, students will likely have an educational experience that they never could have had in the classroom. Being in the same classroom all day, every day can dampen students spirits. A field trip is a chance to do something new and different in a new environment, breaking away from the humdrum school routine. This can reinvigorate students and breathe life into lesson plans. A field trip to a museum gallery or exhibit can not only give students something new to see but also reinforce concepts learned in the classroom just like when we have a company tour in Social Security System, they tour us in their gallery to know some other history. Learning about a scientific process, for instance, which is then illustrated in a display at a science museum, offers students a chance to see the science, which they have already had explained to them, in action. A field trip can also present students with a lot of information tied together neatly, making it easier for a teacher to explain a certain concept, situation or historical period. Though we can use technology such as video and the Internet to offer students glimpses, it can be difficult to get across the true spectacle or meaning of something without taking the class there. An impressive building, for example, doesn't look half as awe-inspiring when viewed on Google image search as it does in real life, and it may be hard for students to truly understand a subject from the classroom. Field trips provide an opportunity for students to learn key skills which are tough to impart in a school environment. For example, the ability to comprehend from what is around you is difficult to teach without the student actually being in a situation where she must use that skill.
There are many advantages of school field trips, which provide students with experiences and memories that can last a lifetime. School field trips allow students to take ownership of their educations, and encourage students' enthusiasm for learning. Pre-teaching is very important when taking students on field trips. A unit on a specific subject can culminate in a field trip. The field trip will reinforce lessons the students learned from the pre-teaching. Education experts extol the value of hands-on learning. Field trips provide an excellent goal for students to achieve by setting before them a culminating activity. Setting goals and achieving them will also boost the students' self-confidence. Experience is the best education. When students actually apply their knowledge in a setting outside of school, these experiences strengthen the learning experience. It is important that suitable adults especially the professors who are knowledgeable and responsible chaperon all school field trips. Field trips can strengthen a student's skills by providing a hands-on learning experience, while also providing a lifelong memory.
